Pi is called pi because pi is the first few letters in perimitros (a Greek word).
According to internet sources "pi" has a relationship to the word "Perimitros" in Greek.

This makes logical sense as pi has a deep connection to the circumference of a circle which is actually the "perimeter" of a circle. If the diameter of a circle is 1, its perimeter (also known as circumference) is equal to pi.
