Continental Army General Horatio Gates (1728-1806) was an Army General during the American Revolution of 1775. He commanded his troops to defeat the British Army in the Battle of Saratoga in 1877(Eastern New York). The victory was so important for the Revolution that Gates was considered to replace George Washington as the Commander-In-Chief of the Continental Army. But on August 16, 1780, General Horatio Gates suffered its worst defeat in the Battle of Camden, South Caroline. After the war, he served at the New York state legislature.
