The rivers were like the major highways of today because at that time there were not any paths wide enough for the travel of people or the supplies they needed. The rivers played a large part in the commerce and settlement of the interior of Virginia. Large ships couldn't go up the James but would dock where Richmond is now and the supplies would be traded to smaller boats going up-river.
