A gap year between school and university can benefit young people in several ways. First, the break from studying makes it possible to return to education with new energy. Students who have a gap year may also value further study more than those who come straight from school. In addition to this, a gap year gives them the opportunity to work and save some money towards the cost of their studies. As well as these significant advantages, courses are usually more interesting if students have used a gap year to get related work experience. Another positive aspect of work experience is that it gives students the opportunity to check that their choice of direction is likely to be right.

However, gap years may have some downsides. Not only is it easy to waste the time, but also unless there is a clear plan for the year, it may be difficult to find a really worthwhile job. In addition to these practical difficulties, young people may feel isolated when their friends head off to university unless they have arranged enjoyable activities that involve meeting new people. An additional drawback is that gap years can result in students losing the habit of study and delay the start of a career.
