The Great Depression following the Wall Street crash of 1928 had a devastating effect on many countries. However Germany was particularly badly affected because of her debts to the West, partially as a result of the crippling reparations of the Treaty of Versailles.

Hitler fully exploited this. He played on the feeling of injustice amongst Germans at the Versailles Treaty, and the feeling of betrayal at the surrender in 1918.

He also played on nationalist extremism and the historical anti-semitism which existed in Germany, blaming international jewry, particularly in controlling global banking for Germany's problems.

As he gained power and abolished all democratic processes these views were fully exploited in Nazi Germany and throughout Europe as Nazi Germany expanded and eventually went to war in 1939.
