The common fibular nerve is more lateral.

The nerves are situated halfway between the skin and bone at the popliteal crease. They are in a distinct sheath, lateral and superficial to the popliteal artery and vein.

The tibial nerve, the bigger of the two divisions, passes inferiorly via the two heads of the gastrocnemius and travels into the popliteal fossa in the middle. Along the lateral edge of the popliteal fossa, the common peroneal nerve or fibular nerve travels parallel to the biceps femoris tendon. Compared to the tibial nerve, it is more superficial and lateral.

Since the needle passes into the biceps femoris during a popliteal block, patients do suffer some little discomfort.
