The resulting thymine dimer is quite stable, although this type of DNA damage can usually be repaired pretty effectively by excising or deleting the two bases and filling up the gaps with new nucleotides. However, when the damage is severe, it collapses. The DNA forms more thymine dimers with prolonged UV exposure, increasing the chance of an imperfect repair or a "missing" dimer. The cell cannot perform its usual tasks if cellular processes are interfered with as a result of inadequate repair or unrepaired damage. Depending on the location and size of the damage, there are now two options. Healthy cells can transform into malignant or precancerous cells if the harm is not too severe. The cell will expire if it is widespread.
