Wilson requested Congress for a declaration of war against Germany after learning of the Zimmermann telegram's warning of an alliance between Germany and Mexico against the United States. On April 6, 1917, the United States formally entered the war.In the meantime, some Americans took up arms in Europe. A number of Americans joined the French Foreign Legion beginning in the early stages of the conflict. Other Americans enlisted with the Lafayette Escadrille, a unit of the French Air Service, or drove ambulances for the American Field Service among them was the poet Alan Seeger, whose poem "I Have a Rendezvous with Death" subsequently became a favorite of President John F. Kennedy.
